Supporting Their Family

It wasn’t after she finished feeding Xie Xuanchen the entire bowl of congee that she started to eat her portion of the food. Quite some time had passed, so the food was already cold. Mu Mingtang secretly lamented that she was being watched and couldn’t use the kitchen. Otherwise, not only would she be able to heat up the food whenever she wanted but also change Xie Xuechen’s daily meals.

He had been sleeping for so long that there was practically no meat left on his wrists. Seeing it made her distressed. How could they treat a patient so roughly? If she had the freedom to move around, she would do anything to help him.

Previously, when she was a poor refugee, she was able to find wild vegetables outside to feed Granny Zhou outside. Who would’ve thought that after she became more or less a rich young miss with no worries about food or clothing, she would be incapable of preparing food for her savior.

With a silent sigh, she quickly finished her meal, stacked the dishes back inside the boxes, and pretended to be full as she placed the boxes outside.

This was one of the good things about being monitored; she didn’t have to worry about her three meals a day, and there was even someone to wash the dishes for her.

After putting down the meal boxes, Mu Mingtang patiently waited until the soldier in charge of bringing meals to give him very specific instructions about the soup, meat, vegetables, and congee she wanted to eat. This request was trivial and perfectly in line with her identity as a chicken who became a phoenix.

The soldier frowned when he heard her demands. Seeing this, Mu Mingtang immediately raised an eyebrow. “What, you don’t want to? Don’t forget that I’m the princess. If you think it’s too troublesome, then let me out and I’ll do it myself.”

The soldier glanced at the captain, whose eyebrows furrowed as he waved his hand. “Do as the princess said.”

“You heard him, do as I say!” Mu Mingtang raised her eyebrow triumphantly. Then, she decided to push it further and added, “It’s too troublesome to have to do this every day, so I’ll just leave a note on the meal boxes from now on! Take it back and prepare my meals according to what I write on the notes. I don’t know how His Highness’s meals are prepared so I won’t ask you to change anything about them, but if you neglect my meals…”

She racked her mind for a good threat. Since she couldn’t leave the manor, she couldn’t do anything and seemed to be making a fool of herself. Suddenly, she had an idea and said, “If you neglect my meals, I’ll refuse to feed the Prince of Qiyang! So you can do it yourself.”

Sure enough, the soldier’s face changed when he heard this. He answered stiffly and hurried away with the meal boxes. When he was a good distance away, she made sure to call out a reminder, “Don’t forget the dishes I ordered tonight! They’d better be on time!”

The soldier’s back tensed up further and his footsteps sped up. The captain of the soldiers, who had witnessed the whole exchange, couldn’t help but admire Mu Mingtang. Normally, after finding out that they were being imprisoned, a person would be too distressed to eat food, let alone order the exact dishes they wanted.

How could she be so optimistic in this situation? The captain stared at Mu Mingtang inquisitively, but she ignored him and shut the door loudly.

Those who had not experienced poverty would never understand the importance of food to one’s survival. Right now, she had clothes, food, and a roof above her head. These were things she’d never dreamed of having when she was a refugee. So what if meant she had to be imprisoned? At least she was still alive.

Moreover, a prince’s manor was no ordinary place. The Qiyang Manor may be desolate, but the food was excellent.

After ordering her food for the evening, she had nothing to do and was so bored that she began to clean the rooms in the east wing.

When night fell and it was time for dinner, she heard a knock at the door. She quickly tidied up and opened it to see two meal boxes already placed on the ground.

Grabbing the boxes, she immediately washed her hands and prepared to feed Xie Xuenchen. As usual, she poured his bowl of congee into the flowerpot before murmuring to herself, “Your Highness, you’ll have to depend on my food now. I never thought I would be able to support the famous Prince of Qiyang one day. I can see my ancestors with my head held up high now.”
