The two men were at loggerheads, as if they were ready to draw swords.

An Yibei said in a nonchalant voice, “Whatever she’s gone through, what does it have anything to do with you? Who are you to question her past?”

Sheng Yize clenched his fists with a scowl. “Mr. An, you better not let me find out that she was ill-treated.”

Although An Yibei had never been particularly nice to him right from the beginning, Sheng Yize had called him “Brother An” like An Xiaxia did out of respect. However, he was addressing him as “Mr. An” now, clearly indicating that he was no longer on the same side as An Yibei.

It was also a gesture which said that he would protect An Xiaxia no matter what.

An Yibei smiled coldly. “Even if I tell you, what can you do? For better or worse, my father and I have been the people by her side all these years, not you.”

Sheng Yize fell silent.

The tears in his eyes had yet to dry and before he could say anything, An Xiaxia began to sob in the closet again.

It sounded suppressed, as if she didn’t dare cry out even when she was drunk.

She was afraid she might be heard.

Sheng Yize had clenched his fists so tightly that his knuckles were cracking. He felt like he was exploding with rage.

Despite Papa An and An Xiaxia denying that she had ever fallen into water before, Sheng Yize still believed that An Xiaxia was the one he had been looking for.

Back when his relationship with An Xiaxia had been tangled up, he had doubted and questioned himself many times: If An Xiaxia really wasn’t the one he was looking for, would he still like her?

It was only until this moment that he realized with a doubt: So what if An Xiaxia wasn’t her?

For all of his seventeen years of life, he had kept an aloof and detached attitude which was only reinforced by his status as the heir to the Sheng family, which made him an unusually privileged teenager.

How lucky was he to have met a girl like An Xiaxia?

How could he stand around when the person he liked had gone through some horrible unknown event?

An Yibei walked past him and carried An Xiaxia to her bed, comforting her with a gentle voice. “Xiaxia, don’t cry. It’s alright. Let me sing you a song…”

He then began to hum a nursery rhyme in a low voice repeatedly and An Xiaxia’s crying grew quieter. After a while, she was finally sound asleep.

Sheng Yize stood watching stubbornly on the side and wouldn’t leave.

Seeing An Xiaxia like this, his heart was in pieces, but there was nothing he could do.

He had been absent from her childhood and adolescence.

He didn’t even know what she liked, what past she had, or if she had lived happily.

“I don’t care what plan you have, but I can tell you this: Xiaxia isn’t the person you’re looking for, so stop wasting your energy on her.” An Yibei’s voice was cold and clear. “And, if you don’t want to make a big scene out of this, please move out of our house at the end of your lease. I’d appreciate it if you could disappear from her life forever. I don’t want to see her in some famous relationship with a huge star. All I want is for her to live a happy, ordinary, and uneventful life. I hope you can respect that.”

At those words, Sheng Yize felt his hostility recede a little.

“Of course I want the best for her as well.”

An Yibei chuckled and his tone sounded self-deprecating. “I’m not at liberty to tell you what she went through when she was little, but she has forgotten everything about her childhood. For some people, to forget is the best way to heal a wound. Therefore, I hope you can stop asking and leave her in peace.”

Sheng Yize’s face was expressionless.

He had guessed right.

Whether An Xiaxia had fallen into water or not was still open to question!
