Chapter 68 - The Situation is Clear

“Sheriff Chandler!” Evan suddenly interrupted Sheriff Chandler’s tirade.

“Huh?” Sheriff Chandler couldn’t react for a while as he looked at Evan in confusion.

“Sheriff, has Miss Blair’s house been sold?” Evan asked out of nowhere.

Sheriff Chandler was a little stunned and looked at Evan blankly, “I heard that a real estate agent has contacted Miss Blair. If it is to be sold, it should be within the next two days.”

As Evan listened, a smile appeared on the corners of his lips, he nodded lightly and said in a low voice, “That’s great. Sheriff, I already have a guess on this matter, but for now, there is still no evidence. If so, can you please help me?”

“What? Do you know who the murderer is?” Sheriff Chandler looked at Evan in surprise and eagerly asked, “Who is it? Please tell me!”

Evan just smiled at Sheriff Chandler’s eager attitude, “Please don’t be so anxious, this is just my guess. If I want to prove this guess, I still need your help.”

“Okay, please don’t worry!” Sheriff Chandler was excited, “I will try my best to cooperate with you, please don’t worry. But, could you please tell me your guess?”

Sheriff Chandler has been tormented for a long time by the repeated twists and turns of this case and now that there is finally hope, Sheriff Chandler naturally hopes that he will be the first to know.

“My dear Sheriff.” Evan said with a smile, “I am not sure about this yet. If I say it now, I’m afraid it will be disrespectful. If you wait until the result comes out, you will naturally know.”

Although Evan looks gentle, there is always a vague feeling in Sheriff Chandler’s heart that if Evan decides to do something, it is difficult for others to change it easily.

“Okay…” Sheriff Chandler spread his hands helplessly, “What help do you need? Please tell me.”

Evan nodded and told Sheriff Chandler all his plans in a low voice. As he listened, Sheriff Chandler’s eyes turned brighter and brighter, and finally he couldn’t help nodding happily, “Okay, please rest assured, I will definitely arrange it.”

Evan nodded thoughtfully, he already has some ideas in his heart.

Sheriff Chandler came anxiously and left contentedly. Evan watched him walk away and he was relieved that this matter finally came to an end.

After Sheriff Chandler left, Evan also started his day’s work. Mrs Sanders prepared the items that Evan needed to deal with, which made Evan’s work easier.

But in the afternoon, something very upsetting happened to Evan.

Rael came to see him again.

The moment Evan saw Rael, he even doubted his eyes, but the expression on his face was still very calm and he still smiled and said hello, “Mr Rael.”

Rael looked at Evan and there was a pained expression on his face, “Oh! Reverend, please help me!”

Evan raised his eyebrows, “What’s wrong with you?”

“Reverend Bruce, since I came to you last time, my situation has gotten worse and worse. It’s hard, now the people in the village look at me like they are watching a plague, it’s really hard for me to survive in the village. Please help me, I really can’t stay here any longer. I have to leave!”

Rael was almost in tears, like he was in pain.

As Evan watched Rael’s performance, his heart did not fluctuate at all, but his tone softened and he said warmly, “Really? This is simply unbelievable.”

When he was down, Rael wanted to use the public opinion to force him to write a letter of recommendation for him. Now that he has been vindicated of all his grievances, he came here to sell how miserable he is. It seems that this Mr Rael really sees him as a fool who will do anything he asks for!

Evan didn’t immediately agree, which made Rael’s heart shake a little bit. This unconditionally tolerant and kind priest seems to be a little different today.

“This is all true, Reverend. Now it’s very difficult for me to survive in Delanlier. Please help me. I really can’t stay for a quarter of an hour!”

Although Rael feels a little weird in his heart, the show still has to go on.

Evan sneered as he looked at Rael’s pretentious look. He squeezed his cuffs and said warmly, “If that’s the case, well, I’ll write you a letter of recommendation, but I still haven’t done all my work for today. If there is nothing, please wait for tomorrow. Tomorrow afternoon, please come to the church to get the letter.”

Evan’s answer made Rael relieved. Although there were some doubtful elements in the middle, the matter was still achieved according to his idea. This is really great, as long as I get this letter of recommendation, I will have a better life in the future.

Rael left contentedly but Evan’s expression gradually sank, this Rael is really annoying!

*******

In the early morning of the next day, news came from Sheriff Chandler that the murderer had been caught and that Mr Johnson’s case had been solved.

As soon as the news came out, the people of Delanlier were shaken. Everyone was still attacking Sheriff Chandler for how he treated poor Mrs Johnson rudely, but at this time, they turned and praised Sheriff Chandler. The man was efficient in his work and the murderer was caught so quickly. This reversal was really dramatic. Even Mrs Johnson, who had been silent and pretending to be weak, had to respond at this time and she praised the police and Sheriff Chandler for their efficiency.

But Sheriff Chandler himself was very worried, because it was obvious that he had not caught any criminal, and this news was just fake news to confuse the real murderer.

“Reverend Bruce.” Sheriff Chandler said to Evan, very worried, “Is there any problem with this matter? If there is any problem, I’m afraid I will have to apologize and resign.”

Evan smiled indifferently, “Please rest assured, this matter is very clear.”

Sheriff Chandler glanced at Evan in surprise, “You said you were not sure yesterday, how come it is clear today?”

Evan smiled. He recalled a series of documents that he had instructed Sheriff Chandler to investigate and said warmly, “After reading the documents you gave me, this matter has been completely cleared up.”

Sheriff Chandler was still a little confused. Yes, those documents are just a background check on the net worth of a few people involved in this matter. I don’t know how many times I have read it, yet I could not find any problems at all. How did Reverend Bruce solve this case?

Sheriff Chandler almost snatched the document from Evan’s hands and flipped through it several times, but even so, he still couldn’t find anything useful.

Sheriff Chandler finally had to give up his actions in frustration and sighed in frustration, “This is so strange. Obviously we know the same things, why do you always think more than I do?”

Evan laughed without saying a word, but thought to himself, that’s because you are too stupid!

Just as Sheriff Chandler was talking to Evan, Rael came again. Unlike yesterday where he had a pained expression on his face, today’s Rael, although he also had a bitter expression, has a hint of excitement in his eyes. But when he saw Sheriff Chandler, he turned stiff.

“Rael? What are you doing here?” Sheriff Chandler asked with a frown. He really didn’t like this person. As a decent gentleman, someone like Rael was the kind of person he despised the most.

Rael smiled stiffly, “I…I came to see Reverend Bruce.” He said while winking at Evan.

Evan did not live up to Rael’s expectations as he said with a smile, “Yes, I have something to deal with, with Mr Rael.”

Evan didn’t say what it was, because Sheriff Chandler was clearly not a prudent man.

“Something?” Sheriff Chandler looked at Evan and Rael suspiciously.

Rael’s sexuality has been all the rage in Delanlier’s gossip. At this time, what matter Rael had with Evan made Sheriff Chandler have doubts.

When Evan saw Sheriff Chandler’s expression, he knew what he was thinking. He smiled and said, “Sheriff, please rest assured, there will be no problem.”

When Sheriff Chandler heard Evan say this, he knew that Evan understood what he meant and he felt a little embarrassed, so he could only say quietly, “Well, I’ll go first.”

Sheriff Chandler couldn’t bear it before he left and he glared at Rael. In his opinion, Rael was simply the source of evil. Whether it was Mr Johnson or Evan, they were all because of Rael.

Rael shivered under Sheriff Chandler’s stern gaze. He walked tremblingly to Evan and whispered, “Reverend.”

Evan nodded and took out a letter from his pocket. The letter was handed to Rael, and he said warmly, “Please don’t pay attention to Sheriff Chandler’s attitude. He has just caught the criminal who committed the murder. He is a little too excited.”

Hearing him talking about this, Rael’s expression changed slightly, and he asked in a low voice, “I just heard about the deeds of the Sheriff, but I don’t know who did such a terrible thing?”

Evan sighed at this time, “Oh, I almost forgot, you are also a victim of this incident. Since that’s the case, there’s nothing wrong if I tell you.”

Having said that, Evan took another look at Rael’s reaction. Rael lowered his head and his hands trembled slightly.

“You should know that Mrs Johnson was framed before, and there was a homeless person who came out to testify for Mrs Johnson for money?” Evan continued.

Rael nodded slightly, raised his head in surprise and looked at Evan, “Do the two have anything to do with this?”

Evan looked at Rael with a smile on his lips, “Speaking of this matter, it is also very interesting that the homeless man happened to see Mr Johnson and a woman in the period when Mrs Johnson did not have an alibi, and he also received money generously given by Mr Johnson. Although this testimony proved Mrs Johnson’s innocence, on the contrary, it put her in a very difficult position. And Sheriff Chandler also found a piece of clothing belonging to the homeless man in Mr Johnson’s home, which also proved that he followed Mr Johnson and he entered Mr Johnson’s house.”

Evan paused for a while, glanced at Rael’s slightly pale face, and then continued, “It’s just, although there is such an inference, there is still no evidence so far, so Sheriff Chandler is still looking for the lady who was with Mr Johnson, hoping to find more evidence.”

“This…this is really good.” Rael smiled reluctantly and he was silent for a moment, but then he couldn’t bear it anymore, he bit his lower lip as he asked, “Did this homeless man really follow Mr Johnson back home?”

Evan seemed a little surprised when he heard this question and said, “Yes, there is absolutely no problem, a corner of his clothes got caught and hung on a nail and it was determined to be his clothes after investigation. But it’s a little strange that this homeless man keeps saying that it was the lady who killed Mr Johnson, and Sheriff Chandler is trying to not be too careless now and has called for a painter to draw the portrait of the lady and post it in the papers to see if they can use it as bait to lure the lady as a witness, and then it will be easier to compare the two.”

When he said this, Evan still had a smile on his face, but Rael’s whole body had turned completely stiff.
