Chapter 228: Is Anyone Available Tonight?

Besides letting out a grunt when Gao Peng told him his destination, the taxi driver didn’t say a word for the entire journey.

Not at all fazed by the driver’s silence, Gao Peng simply watched the scenery pass by outside the window.

The streets grew emptier as the car drove on.

“Mister, the Southern Sky Group isn’t this way,” said Gao Peng.

“I’m just taking a detour to avoid traffic on the highway,” said the driver. The driver’s voice sounded hoarse, as if he hadn’t used it in a long time.

Gao Peng narrowed his eyes at him, then spotted a public bathroom nearby.

“Stop the car. I need to use the toilet.”

The driver swerved the car to the right. “We’ll reach the Southern Sky Group in 20 minutes. Just try to hold it.”

Goldie, who had been quietly sitting beside Gao Peng, suddenly leapt up and struck the driver’s head with one of its wings!

The driver was dazed for a moment. There was a throbbing pain in the back of his head. An evil look suddenly flitted across his face.

Cursing under his breath, the driver said, “Don’t move too much back there, little guy. There must be something wrong with your bladder if someone as young as you can’t hold it in for just a bit longer.” He let out a chuckle, as if there was something funny about what he had said.

“Goldie, beat him up,” Gao Peng said loud enough for the driver to hear.

The driver’s face went pale as he immediately stepped on the brakes. “Let’s not do anything hasty now.”

Gao Peng calmly stepped out of the car and pulled Goldie out after him. “You should have stopped when I told you to. Tell me, who sent you?”

The driver shook his head. “Let’s not jump to conclusions,” he said, raising both his hands to show that he meant Gao Peng no harm.

At the same time, the trunk silently opened and a white-furred monkey stealthily climbed out of it.

Thanks to its padded feet, it didn’t make a sound as it made its way across the asphalt.

The white-furred monkey slowly approached Gao Peng from behind, its eyes gleaming menacingly.

Then it struck him in the back of the head.

As Gao Peng fell, he saw the monkey hit Goldie’s head, as well. A purple light flashed across Goldie’s body. Without warning, the duck’s body expanded.

The driver’s look of glee turned to one of surprise. Why is it still standing? Something’s not right, he thought.

Gao Peng began rubbing the back of his head. Even though he wasn’t seriously injured, his head still smarted.

He saw a three-foot-tall white-furred monkey glaring at him, its dark green eyes twinkling in the darkness. When it realized that Gao Peng was looking at it, it grinned at him and aimed a kick at his crotch.

That is one evil monkey, he thought.

Gao Peng quickly shielded his crotch with his hands, and the monkey’s foot landed on the back of his hand.

The sudden pain in his hand was redirected to Goldie, whose body expanded again with a flash of purple light.

Goldie had already grown six feet. Its yellow feather coat was now on the verge of bursting at the seams.

It pulled down the coat’s zipper with its wings and shook off its feathers, revealing sturdy muscles beneath.

[Monster Name]: Frost Corpse Monkey

[Monster Level]: Level 20

[Monster Attribute]: Yin/Corpse

[Monster Grade]: Excellent

A Corpse-type monster, right after our encounter with the Green Haunt. This couldn’t simply be a coincidence, thought Gao Peng. The driver must have come to avenge the Green Haunt’s death. Let’s see who else you’re working with.

The driver’s face contorted into a snarl as he shook a metal bar out of the sleeve of his jacket and swung it towards Gao Peng.

Gao Peng easily caught the metal bar in his left hand.

His body still retained the positive effects of his familiars’ growth. Though he probably wouldn’t have been able to handle the monkey on his own, he could still knock its master out with his bare hands.

Recalling the boxing form his grandfather had taught him, Gao Peng slammed his right foot down and channeled his power through every joint of his body into his right fist.

He then struck out his fist, making an explosive sound ring through in the air.

The driver was instantly sent flying across the road when Gao Peng’s punch connected.

After realizing that its master had been knocked out, the Frost Corpse Monkey screeched and leapt at Gao Peng.

Goldie bent over and closed its beak over the monkey’s head. Goldie had grown so big that the monkey could barely reach its chest.

“Don’t eat it,” said Gao Peng, wary that the monkey might have been poisonous.

Goldie hesitated for a moment, then spat out the Frost Corpse Monkey and stomped on it.

With the driver and his familiar finally taken care of, Gao Peng surveyed his surroundings.

He was now in an empty alley with only a couple houses nearby. Having heard the commotion outside, the people inside had all closed their windows and turned off the lights.

Gao Peng carried the driver’s body into the trunk, then let Goldie break all of the Frost Corpse Monkey’s limbs and had the duck keep a close eye on the monkey in the backseat. When everything was settled, Gao Peng stepped on the gas pedal and began driving back to the Southern Sky Group.

After a while, Gao Peng got out of the car and tried to call his grandfather. However, his grandfather didn’t pick up.

He then tried to call the number his grandfather had given him. Someone picked up on the other end after two rings.

“Young master, how may I help you?” said the voice on the other end courteously.

“Is anyone available tonight?” asked Gao Peng.

There was a silence for a moment. Then the voice said, “Please wait for a moment. Where are you now, young master?”

“I’m outside the company.”

“We’ll be on our way.” The voice then hung up the phone.

A few minutes later, Gao Peng heard the faint whirring of a helicopter in the sky. Looking up, he saw two white lights shining down on him as three helicopters slowly descended towards him.
