She became depressed after that, and died out of grief.
Emmeline and her brother had been too young then to understand much.

"I don't know what to do, either."
Doris' tears flowed down her cheeks. "My sister would go crazy if she found out. What about her two
daughters?"
"But… I can't just let this happen, right?"
Emmeline said, "Well, you've got to teach the bastard a lesson at the very least! See if he turns over a
new leaf and all! If he does, you can give him a chance to redeem himself. If he doesn't, you should
just tell your sister to let him go. No point in keeping a man like that around!"
