Alan naturally complied with pleasure, but when the old lady heard Chloe Malan’s name, she blurted
out, “No.”
Olive knew that she was upset. She had been beating around the bush along the way that she pretty
much already knew the entire event. The old lady was mistreated at her house and her heart was on
fire at this moment.
Actually, she could see through that the old lady couldn’t hide it in her heart anymore. Olive laughed,
“Mother, if you don’t want to, how can we talk about this matter?”
“I’ve nothing to talk with you,” the old lady murmured nastily.
Alan wanted to ask where did the girl offend the old lady, but Olive spoked out before he could.
“Mother, that’s not cute. You ran all the way to the hotel just to talk with me, right. Let’s go. We’ll be
having dinner while talking.”
The old lady said, “I’ve no appetite.”
“You still have to eat a little even if you don’t have appetite. Besides, you don’t want to starve your
future grandson, do you?” Olive switched to play the family card.
Indeed, the old lady softened, but her face still showed reluctance. Yet she still let Olive drag her into
Alan’s car.
Along the way, no one spoke. Alan felt sorry for his wife. Several times he saw through the rearview
mirror at her sitting with his mother in the back seat with her seemingly calm face. No one knew how
much bitterness was hidden under it.
It wasn’t far, but because of the rush hour, it took more than ten minutes to arrive.
They picked a quiet private room, separating themselves from the outside world. Olive ordered a few of
the old lady’s favorite dishes.
She learned about the old lady’s preferences when she was living in Jiangcheng for a few days. She
knew from the kitchen and Mrs. Hudson.
The speaker wasn’t interested, but the listener was. She thought it would come in handy one day.
“Mother, didn’t you say that you won’t come to Luo City? Why are you so fast changing your mind?”
Alan asked slowly.
Mrs. Hoyle snorted coldly, “If I don’t come, your son will be snatched away by others.”
Alan’s face went frigid and helplessly asked, “Mother, did you go to the Steele’s house and cause
trouble again? Can you stop it?”
Mrs. Hoyle patted the table. “I’m causing trouble? I went there with good intention to reconcile. But look
at her mother, saying that the child is a Steele and has nothing to do with the Hoyle. You’re not
marrying into the Steele, what right does your son have to take their last name? Do you think they care
about you? They all look at you as a fool.”
Alan frowned. How could he not know how much of his mother’s emotions were mixed in the words?
His girl had a pair of the most open-minded parents in the world. Even if they had said something
unacceptable to his mother, they did it make her treat their daughter with fairness as parents. It was a
matter-of-fact.
They had no objection regarding the child. If his mother was willing to settle in Luo City, they didn’t
even mind that he and Olive moved out from the Steele’s house to live with the old lady, as long as
they could still get to see their daughter and grandchildren.
They believed that he could protect his girl. But many times, he couldn’t stop his mother’s prejudices
and bad words.
Based on the current his mother’s acceptance of Olive, he still needed to think again about living
together and forgot other things. His girl’s pregnant body alone couldn’t withstand his mother.
“Mother, let me ask you. You want this child because you really like the child or just to make him burn
incense for the Hoyle?” Alan asked in another way.
Mrs. Hoyle said, “I just want this child. What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. It’s just that if you don’t really like this child, I personally think it’s better for him to grow up in
the Steele Family. At least, the Steele will give him love and warmth instead of coldness.”
Alan’s expression didn’t seem to be joking.
Mrs. Hoyle was taken aback, “Than do you mean you’re planning to give this child to the Steele?”
“This child does have half of the Steele’s blood. Why not?” Alan asked indifferently.
“I disagree. You already have a child and this child must be a Hoyle.” Mrs. Hoyle was firm.
“Isn’t it thanks to you that Annie takes the Steele name?” Alan deliberately reminded her mother. It was
her concealment, deception, methods, and stubbornness that made the matter happened today. It was
the cause of everything.
“Can you stop mentioning the past?” Mrs. Hoyle grumbled. “Haven’t I accepted the child? I’ve also
accepted the one in her stomach now.”
“It does look like it on the surface. But in reality, you just want to make Olive feel sorry. Mother, please
forgive me. I don’t want my child to be your trophy,” Alan pointed out the old lady’s thought.
Mrs. Hoyle became furious. “What bullshit are you talking about? You’ve mind when I don’t accept.
You’ve also mind when I accept. What do you want from me?”
Seeing the flames between both the mother and son ignited, Olive had no choice but to act as a
peacemaker and glared at Alan. “Shut your mouth.”
But Mrs. Hoyle didn’t appreciate it. It even triggered her anger more. “You don’t need to fake kindness.
You drag me to my son so that you can have my son’s support and achieve your initial goal.”
Olive innocently shrugged. “There’s a saying, you can know the strength of a horse only after a long
journey; you can only know what’s in the person’s heart after you get to know better. You’ll know later
after nine months of pregnancy whether I lie to you or not. I think you still have this patience, right?”
“Then give me a clear statement today. Will this child be a Hoyle or Steele?” Mrs. Hoyle insisted.
“I want to give Alan a little Hoyle. What do you think?” Olive asked back with a smile. The meaning of
her words was self-evident.
Mrs. Hoyle snorted, “That’s just about right.”
Alan wanted to say more, but stopped by Olive’s glare. They needed to be considerate towards an
elder who suffered from depression, hysteria, overthinking, and who loved to cause trouble without
reason.
As for their previous grudges, rights and wrongs, let bygones be bygones. She also wasn’t the kind of
person who stayed in revenge.
Life needed to move forward. Staying in the past would only make one’s mind narrow and even go to
the extremes.
The old lady wasn’t an unforgivable person. It was a mother’s nature to protect her children.
An unpleasant dispute was finally resolved. The old lady’s expression eased up and the waited had
served the dishes.
Olive gave her some food, smiling and joking, “So you have appetite now, right? These are all your
favorites.”
“Stop flattering.” Even though she said that, Mrs. Hoyle didn’t refuse her kindness.
Olive took the chance and said, “You’re wrong. This kind of diligence is better. Let’s use another word
instead. This should be called filial.”
