What a pity, the next day, the connection recovered and the wedding went on as planned.
When Su Tang saw the two of them exchange their rings and embrace each other in a kiss, she felt as if a thousand insects were gnawing at her heartstrings. No longer able to keep her emotions in check, she picked up the vase on the table and hurled it at the television.
The vase shattered completely, but the television remained intact.
Onscreen was Li Lei expressing his love for Xia Ling. “I will love you forever, take care of you and protect you. No matter where you are or how you turn out to look, I will stay by you, forever and always.”
Xia Ling smiled so sweetly, she looked like the most blissful woman on earth.
Su Tang stormed to the kitchen and found a chopper. She began hacking on the television until the screen finally shattered, sparks flew, and then everything became dead silent. Even then, her anger was not quelled. She continued hacking at it until it became a pile of debris. Only then did she release the chopper and fall to the ground.
“Airplane! Airplane’s flying and flying… lalala…” A child’s voice rang out before Li Rui appeared with an airplane model. He was running around the house imitating the flight of an airplane.
“Lalala, lalala, lalala…” Li Rui continued yelling as his footsteps thundered across the ground. The pile of debris appeared interesting to him, so he tossed the airplane model on top of it and shouted, “The airplane’s up the mountain! The airplane has crashed! The airplane is dead! Dead! Dead! Lalala…”
Su Tang was getting frustrated. She glared at him and said, “Get out!”
“Lalala! Boom!” Li Rui completely ignored his mother and went on playing with the airplane and the debris. He grabbed a random piece of junk and threw it towards his mother. “Boom boom boom! It’s a fighter jet! Jet number five, get ready for attack! Cannon! Boom boom!”
The object hit Su Tang pretty hard.
A bruise began forming on her elbow.
Su Tang looked at this worthless child and remembered how Little Shaohui looked on screen a while ago. That child was in a white suit, looking handsome and trying to appear serious, what an extremely adorable boy. But what about this one at home? Such an ill-bred child! Both of them were five years old, going on six, but why was there such stark contrast?!
She’d lost to Xia Ling, and even her son had lost to Xia Ling’s son!
An inexplicable rage rose inside Su Tang and she gave him a tight slap on the face. “Piece of junk! Fly! I’m telling you to fly! Did you hear me! Fly!” Her slap was hard and Li Rui yelled the moment it hit him.
Li Rui had no idea why his mother hit him, but he had long been used to his lawless ways. Now, he was struggling to hit his mother with his elbow. “Bad mom! Bad mom! I hate you! Airplane, attack Mom!”
Su Tang was even angrier now. She pushed him to the floor and hit him incessantly.
Li Rui tried to retaliate initially, but he was a child after all, how could he possibly defend himself against an adult? It didn’t take long for him to cry and beg for mercy. “It hurts! Mom, stop hitting! Bad mom! You can’t hit me!”
His wailing got louder.
Su Tang got increasingly frustrated and her beatings got harder. Slowly, the image of Li Rui faded out before her and was replaced by all those years of indignance and pent up anger—she saw the first time she met Xia Ling and how that pretty face of hers made her tempted to rip it apart; she saw the time Li Lei was dejected because of that woman; she saw Li Lei tucking her in when she’d fallen asleep unknowingly; she even saw how Li Lei missed her and longed for her for all four years they had been apart…
Until the end, when both of them finally tied the knot.
“I’ll beat you! I’ll beat you to death!” Su Tang was in tears now, but even as her vision blurred, the vengeance in her eyes did not quell. She treated Li Rui as Xia Ling and got increasingly ruthless with her beatings. Initially, Li Rui could still scream and shout, but now he wasn’t even crying anymore. There was no way to run or beg for mercy, and now he had gone silent.
When the maids came rushing out after hearing the commotion, they got a shock—
They saw Su Tang hitting Li Rui like a madwoman while the child was curled up on the ground. Beneath him was a pool of fresh blood on the sturdy wood flooring.
They hurriedly pulled Su Tang aside and sent him to the hospital.
Li Lei received news of it that very afternoon—after the wedding, while they were holding a reception in the yard, a subordinate came up to him and whispered in his ear.
Xia Ling, who was right beside him, asked, “What’s wrong?”
Li Lei smiled. “It’s nothing much. You can go get some sun first and drink some fruit wine, I’ll go check if the helicopter for the guests is ready.”
Xia Ling nodded her head and saw him off.
Li Lei took a few steps away until he was out of her sight before asking the subordinate, “How’s Li Rui’s injury?”
The subordinate said, “It’s serious. He’s still undergoing emergency treatment and in critical condition. Sister Su Tang isn’t in a good state, either. She hasn’t eaten anything or said a word since they discovered her. The doctor suspects…” The subordinate paused midsentence.
“Suspects what?” Li Lei asked.
“Suspects Sister Su Tang’s mental state may not be normal. He suggests… that she gets a thorough assessment of her psychiatric condition.” The subordinate was a little pained. “Young Master, would you like to see her?”
These subordinates went through life and death with Su Tang since many years back and felt strongly for her. They knew well and clear that elegant and righteous Su Tang only lost her mind because of the Young Master’s wedding. Although Xia Ling was a rather good woman, many of them still sympathized with Su Tang.
Li Lei looked at him with cold eyes. “Ah Wang, you know what occasion it is today.”
“But, Sister Su Tang is already in this state! Little Young Master Rui is still in critical condition…”
“I’m not a doctor nor a psychiatrist, what difference does it make if I go?” Li Lei did not waver. “Contact the best specialist around and pay any price it takes to save Li Rui. As for Su Tang, get somebody to stay by her side and take care of her round the clock. Over the next few days, if there aren’t any major changes in their conditions, don’t come bothering me, and don’t even think about going to Xiao Ling—send my order down, anyone who lets Xiao Ling know about this will get it from me!”
The subordinate was indignant but helpless, and he had no choice but to leave.
Li Lei took a glass of wine from a passing waiter and began scanning the yard for Xia Ling. She had changed into another outfit and now donned a pastel pink gown that subtly showed off her curves; she looked so stunning. She was holding a glass of wine as well and was happily chatting with Bai Murong and Luo Luo. Luo Luo had her arm hooked around Xia Ling affectionately as they spoke.
