Chapter 1276: Guardians Have No Right
“Thank you?” She sneered and said curtly, “Wei Lingnan, what right do you have to request a thank-you from me? Don’t you forget who started all of this, you should count yourself lucky that I haven’t killed you for this!”
She looked so beautiful when she got angry.
The lights in the cafeteria highlighted her exquisite features and her glossy hair. She was in a little gown studded with pearls and had on a faint fragrance—regardless of the angle one looked at her from, she was flawlessly beautiful.
A beautiful human.
She was a human being right now, and humans were a complicated race. They had strange standards and ideals when picking a partner, and it was full of uncertainty and lacking in structure and objectivity. Wei Lingnan was a little frustrated. Why were things so troublesome here? He was beginning to miss the Skatana Planet, where only a small handful of all beings were female. The females would fight one another to death, and the last survivor would be the Queen who got to choose her partner. She would host a grand ceremony at which brave soldiers would come forward to fight for her hand in marriage, then the last “man” standing would be the Queen’s husband.
It was a simple procedure that was passed on through the generations.
This was to ensure that every generation of the Skatana species got the best and strongest genetic material to safeguard their population’s survival.
It was logical and rational.
But look at the humans. Their way of finding a mate was confusing and there was no mechanism at all, it was no wonder they were among the less advanced civilizations in the universe.
He had no idea how to win her over.
Xia Yingluo glared at him again before leaving in a huff.
Wei Lingnan was left alone on the soft couch, sipping his coffee all by himself.
A while later, the door was opened and in came a tall figure dressed in a clean white shirt. He took a seat opposite Wei Lingnan. “Here are the books you wanted.” The man then placed a pile of books before Wei Lingnan. He said with disdain, “Don’t make me do such a thing again, it’s so tasteless.”
Wei Lingnan said, “Thank you, Shaoyin.”
So it was Wei Shaoyin, his supposed “nephew”, the Young Master of the Wei Family Biopharmaceutical Group.
Back then, when Wei Lingnan arrived on Earth, he had joined a family in order to conceal his identity. He brainwashed everyone in the family, altered their memories, and had them believe he was one of them by blood. As a form of repayment, he helped to build this family’s power by allowing their business to expand to its current size.
Wei Shaoyin asked for a cup of coffee and looked at him. “Something went wrong with your relationship with Yingluo again?”
The books on the table were all specified by Wei Lingnan, and they were all about “Secrets to a Successful Relationship”, “How to Get Along with Her”, “This Is How You Woo a Girl” and the like. Wei Lingnan had always been guided by logic and rationale; it wasn’t that hard to guess what was going on if he asked for such books.
Wei Lingnan was a little upset. “Can’t humans be a little more predictable? I’ve read so many of these books and acted accordingly—giving her an allowance, taking her out on coffee dates—it’s been so many occasions, but she hasn’t changed her attitude towards me.”
“The books never taught you to hold her hostage!” Wei Shaoyin could feel his anger rising already. Why was it so difficult to hold a conversation with an alien?
When he went to the underground base to save Xia Yingluo, he’d found out that this “Uncle” was, in fact, an alien! But it didn’t take him very long to accept this fact and treat him as per normal…
As the only person in the entire Wei family to never have been brainwashed, and also the only one who knew of Wei Lingnan’s actual identity, Wei Shaoyin had become a sad, pathetic runner—helping him with the purchase of books on one day, checking out cafeterias for him on another…
Sometimes he really wanted to hit someone.
Wei Lingnan was even more puzzled now. “If I don’t keep her locked in, she’ll run away. How are we supposed to nurture any feelings this way?”
“Aren’t you lovers in your past lives? When she recalls the past, she’d naturally fall for you. What’s the hurry?” Wei Shaoyin said and looked at those books with disdain again. “If you still can’t learn the ropes about the human race, why don’t you try it your way? If Ying Luo really was your girlfriend, maybe she’d be touched by the ways of your race.”
Wei Shaoyin was just saying it casually.
But Wei Lingnan seemed deep in thought. “Will it… really work?”
Wei Shaoyin was curious now. “So tell me, how do you woo girls on your planet?”
Wei Lingnan said, “We kill all other males who are our competition.”
Wei Shaoyin was a little stunned. “… You can’t be serious.”
Wei Lingnan glanced at him. “This is how we find a partner back on our planet.”
“That’s perverted and cruel.” Wei Shaoyin winced. “I was just kidding, please don’t try this out over here. You’d better try something else. Otherwise, Yingluo will definitely turn against you. No girl will be able to tolerate that.”
Wei Lingnan drank his coffee in silence.
Wei Shaoyin truly regretted his words. How could he have brought up such a horrible suggestion? He asked cautiously, “You can’t really be considering what I just said?”
“No,” Wei Lingnan said.
If he followed the Skatana rules strictly, it was impossible for him to ever end up with Ah Luo.
Or rather, tens of millions of years ago, in Ah Luo’s previous life, she’d never really “belonged” to him anyway.
He had no right to join in the fight for the Queen’s hand.
All guardians were fruits that the World Tree had abandoned even before they were fully ripe—they were known as the inadequate and weak ones. So how could they possibly be fit to be the Queen’s partner? Even if everyone was allowed to take part in that fight, the guardians would always be excluded.
He could only watch as all the other male soldiers fought one another for Ah Luo.
He’d fought hard all along and kept Ah Luo alive, just so that he could watch her become someone else’s bride?
A flash of darkness could be seen in Wei Lingnan’s eyes as he recalled the day the planet exploded. She had looked into his eyes with hatred. “I will not let you have your way, I’d rather die than be with you—”
And then the massive explosion happened.
He only managed to grab her hand and keep her little finger bone fragment after the blast.
She’d really done it.
She had died before getting together with him.
But what about him, he’d hopelessly found that he still loved her and wanted to revive her. If she could just open her eyes and look at him, and call him by his original name with their Skatana accent one more time…
He’d be content for this lifetime.
His eyes were getting watery. He shut them and took another sip of coffee.
The bitter aroma unleashed itself in his mouth and down his throat, making its way to his heart.
