Chapter 748
The instant Nicole heard what Betty had said, she froze as a chill ran down her spine. What did she mean by that? It
couldn't be, could it?
She immediately clutched Betty's hand in agitation. Maybe because of her emotional turmoil, she exerted too much
force in her grip.
As a result, Betty cried out in pain, then quickly tried to console her.
"You don't have to worry, Madeline. I will protect Nicky well. The situation has gotten so much worse. People are
dying now. If you don't go now, I'm afraid you will never feel at peace with yourself."
Nicole's eyes widened at the implications, and her eyes were full of disbelief. Her lips trembled as she choked out,
"Ms. Betty, what are you talking about? Do you mean my mother never reported the hit and run to the police

because William threatened her with my life?"
Betty's bright eyes turned dim again when she heard Nicole's question. It seemed as though she couldn't
understand her. Finally, she frowned and asked in confusion, "Madeline, what do you mean?"
Nicole quickly recalled that Betty thought of her as Madeline, so she promptly changed her approach and
questioned, "Anderson used Nicky's life to threaten me, right, Ms. Betty?"
Then, she stared hard at Betty's face as if she was searching for answers through her eyes.
Betty nodded as she reached out her hand and took Nicole's hand. She said with all seriousness, "You can rest
assured that I will take care of Nicole well, Madeline. We can't repeat the same mistakes anymore."
Nicole didn't know what to do. Tears began flowing down her face as her nose began to run. Sure enough, all of the
difficulties that her mother faced were because of that blasted William!
"Okay," Nicole replied tearfully as she held Betty's hand and nodded. Then, she said in between her sobs, "I won't
let Nicky get hurt."

Betty heard her words and immediately felt relieved. She nodded firmly, "Okay, you have to go. Go and report it to
the police. I'll take care of anything that happens here."
Nicole didn't know what to say in the face of Betty's determination.
Zachary had been standing at the side, not saying a word. After the conversation with Nicole, Betty just noticed his
presence. She sized him up, looking at him up and down, before asking in a strange tone, "Who is this tall and
handsome young man? He looks pretty decent."
Zachary stepped forward and introduced himself gently, "Hi, Ms. Betty. I'm Nicky's friend."
Betty's eyes lit up with joy, and a smile appeared on her face. She held his arm, regarded him carefully, and
exclaimed with a smile, "You're Nicky's friend? Good, that's good. You look like a very good man."
Although he was secretly pleased by her compliments, he didn't show it as he continued to stand straight-backed.

Just then, Nicole remembered the purpose of visiting Betty and said, "Ms. Betty, I came here today to tell you that
I'm going to go abroad in a few days. Can I bring you along with me?"
Betty didn't have any relatives or friends here, so she shouldn't have much reluctance to leave.
So, when she heard Nicole's invitation, she tilted her head in bewilderment. "Why should we go abroad?"
Then, Nicole explained softly, "Since I'm leaving, I don't feel safe leaving you here alone. I will get the best doctor
there to help treat your illness."
Betty's dementia wasn't due to natural causes. Instead, it was caused by the medication Lydia had fed Betty, so
there must be some hope to save her.
She lowered her head to think, before nodding, "Okay. Wherever Nicky goes, I will go."
When Nicole saw that Betty agreed without a fuss, she breathed a sigh of relief. "Okay, in a few days' time, I'll bring
you out of the hospital. But, for now, please rest properly."
Betty nodded distractedly. Just as she was about to head back to her bed, she suddenly turned around as if she
remembered something. For once, her eyes were clear as she stared right at Nicole.
"Your mother loves you a lot, Nicky. Because of you, she had to make a lot of compromises. You must treat her
well."
