Chapter 390: Realistic View of Marriage

Yun Xiangxiang believed Yang Qi wouldn’t hide anything from her, so she quickly went back home after class.

Song Meng’s campus would reopen a few days later than Yun Xiangxiang. Li Xiangling had gone back to university, but Song Meng stayed back to look after Yun Lin for Xiangxiang, so she hadn’t left today.

While Yun Lin was doing his homework, Song Meng took Little Fairy to herself, trying to play with it. When she was trying to take a photo of it, Song Meng suddenly felt a chill run down her spine.

Yun Xiangxiang was already standing quietly behind her, much to Song Meng’s shock when she turned around.

Song Meng patted her chest as she tried to calm down. “Can you not scare me like that, Xiangxiang? I almost had a heart attack.”

“I’m scaring you? No, no, no, no. It’s the other way around.” Yun Xiangxiang sneered. “I saw Yang Qi today.”

Song Meng immediately went into overdrive as she tried to think of something. Seeing her like this, Yun Xiangxiang crossed her arms as she sat on the sofa. “Come on, give me a story.”

Song Meng lowered her head, sitting beside Yun Xiangxiang, looking defeated. “I was shocked when he confessed to me. We’re great friends, so I don’t want to reject him, or else it’ll be awkward between us. But I can’t kick him out of your fan club either, so I said what I said…”

She didn’t expect this innocent youth to take what she said seriously, and he started devoting all his time to studying. In the last semester, he wasn’t in the course’s top thirty, but now he was second in the whole course, topping even Yun Xiangxiang.

“Then why did you say that after his results are out?” Yun Xiangxiang was annoyed.

Song Meng was her best friend, but Yang Qi was her friend too. Now Song Meng was playing with Yang Qi. Scumbag, Yun Xiangxiang thought.

“Can you don’t look at me as if I’m a scumbag?” Song Meng grumbled. “I didn’t know why I said that. I mean, I’m touched and happy that he’s putting so much effort into pursuing me…”

Song Meng was a plain Jane, but she had a great personality, and she could mingle with anyone. She did have boys pursuing her, even after she went into university.

But those guys either closed in on her because they wanted something from her, or they were pursuing her out of pity, thinking she was someone who could be easily taken.

Out of all the boys, only Yang Qi was so earnest in this endeavor. Not to mention she spent more time with him compared to how much she spent with Yun Xiangxiang. They created a lot of things together for Yun Xiangxiang.

Since the day she knew him in 11th Grade, Song Meng had always thought of Yang Qi as someone very nice and easily taken advantage of.

Yang Qi would listen to whatever request she had, fulfilling it no matter how ridiculous it was. When he was facing Yun Xiangxiang, Yang Qi behaved even better.

But later on, by chance, Song Meng found out Yang Qi wasn’t as easily taken advantage of as she thought. He was a mischievous person who was only willing to allow himself to be taken advantage of by them.

Song Meng changed her opinion about Yang Qi since then. So when Yang Qi confessed to her, the usually direct, sharp Song Meng (That was how she saw herself) couldn’t bring herself to reject him.

But she didn’t want to agree to it so easily, so she used Yun Xiangxiang as an excuse.

Song Meng felt touched when she found out Yang Qi managed to do it, for it was a warm feeling to know someone truly loved her.

She loved handsome guys, but she knew chicken soup for the soul was more important than ice cream for the eyes.

“You like him, but not to the point where you would want to date?” Yun Xiangxiang probed her after listening.

Song Meng nodded incessantly. “If he isn’t as innocent as I thought, I’ll try to date him. A breakup is the worst that can happen.”

Only through a period of dating could a couple know if they were compatible. Even Yun Xiangxiang tried getting along with Song Mian first before falling for him.

But with how Yang Qi was like, Yun Xiangxiang had never seen him being angry before. She thought if Song Meng dumped him after she thought he wasn’t the one for her after a period of dating, he would fall from grace and become a sociopath. The moment she thought of this, Song Meng felt terrified.

“So why did you tell him you would consider marrying him if he can top me every semester and still loves you after graduation?” Yun Xiangxiang wanted to knock some sense into Song Meng’s head.

“I have an additional condition. He has to buy a house in Beijing after marriage before I’d consider marrying him.” Song Meng thought it was hard to buy a house.

“Do you think he will fail if he gets serious?” Yun Xiangxiang sneered.

“No…” Song Meng didn’t dare doubt Yang Qi’s potential.

She took a pillow and sat up. “If he can do that, and if his love for me can burn for so long, I think I won’t be averse to marrying him.”

Yun Xiangxiang’s anger subsided when Song Meng was so serious. “What if you don’t like him by then?”

“My parents don’t have any love between them, but they have lived together in peace for so long.” Song Meng didn’t think this was a problem. “We have a lot of high school friends who got married just because they thought their blind date was great.”

They might just be university students, but a lot of their classmates were already getting married.

After seeing so much of this, Song Meng didn’t think the romance was necessary, though she did look forward to it.

“I’m a direct girl. I admit that I envy the deep love between you and Song Mian.

But not everyone can have this kind of love. I believe most women didn’t get married because of love, but they just settled when they were getting on in age.

I’m better than them, right? I got married to someone who likes me so much. He’s a guy who can do anything for me, so I can’t complain, can I?”

It was challenging to get the top three in any Qingdao University courses. Yang Qi didn’t have any rich dad, so it would be hard to buy a house in Beijing.

If Yang Qi could do this for her, she didn’t think she had any reason to reject him.

Love could change, so a man who was responsible and committed to the lady they liked was more reliable.

“What if you meet someone you love in the future?” Yun Xiangxiang asked.

Song Meng shook her head. “Even if he’s someone I like, if the timing is wrong, then that’s not a love that belongs to me. Those that are mine will not be late.”

“What if the day truly comes?” Yun Xiangxiang had to get this clear.

“If I meet someone I like after I get married to Yang Qi, I will stay far, far away from that man.

Nobody can say they will love one person in their whole life. Even if Yang Qi loves me so much now, I can’t be sure he won’t meet someone he likes more in the future, right?”

Yun Xiangxiang nodded in agreement.

“Men and women will be tested by temptation on the path of growth. Passing or failing it depended on the morality of the person.”

Song Meng thought she had little to no strengths, but at least her mind and morality were on the compass’s right path.

This was her view on marriage. It might be imperfect and not magical, but she was imperfect to start with. Nor was she a princess or some Cinderella who lived in a fairy tale world.

She was a person who lived in reality.

“You’re a good girl, Mengmeng. You’ll live a happier life than anyone else.” Yun Xiangxiang hugged her.

“Miss Yun Xiangxiang, I do not want to hear you say that. That isn’t consolation coming from you. It sounds like mockery to me.”

The woman living the happiest life is telling me to live a happier life than everyone else? What the heck?
