Rufus felt he could not control his anger. He had to say what he wanted to say, or he would have a
argument with his father just as he had done twenty years ago.
"Rufus, you know what I mean. I'm not saying that Brian's management was not good. I found a
suitable person for him, to be prepared in advance, so that his in-laws could support him in case of
accidents.”
Felix became angry first.
Now he did not want to hear anything about Winnie, did not want to hear other people's words of
persuasion. It was not that he was unable to cope with it, but afraid of being shaken.
"Dad, you think too much. Your ideas are out of date. If something really happens to the Bennet Group,
his father-in-law would run the fastest and may kick on Brian in the back."
"You know why I say that? Because it is a marriage of interest, they are all mercenary. If he sees that
the Bennet Group is going down, he will save himself first. Who do you think is going to save the
Bennet Group selflessly?"
Rufus tried his best to persuade his father. As for what happened today, he did not want it happen
again. He did not want the kids and Winnie to be sad.
Felix was speechless, panting, he sat on the sofa with an angry face and looked away.
It was possible. He did it for the benefit, and the other side must do it for the benefit. He just could not
sacrifice the safety of the Bennet Group for the unknown.
“And, since you want to find a rich girl, you do not trust Brian. You don't trust him he can manage the
Bennet Group, and you don't trust his ability to handle things when they go wrong."
Rufus continued seeing that his father was speechless.
"You said you were doing it for the Bennet family. Dad, you've had arranged marriages for me, but is
the Bennet family good? Does the Bennet family have a good relationship? They are all people who put
the interests first, who will put the family in the eye?"
"Dad, it can be good when a family has a good relationship. There's no way a business can thrive if you
don't know how to handle the family affairs. Even if you win, even if the Bennet Group is on top of the
world, do you feel happy if the family is in a mess?"
Rufus asked his father. The Bennet family was good in the eyes of outsiders, but who saw the inside of
it? Which one of the Bennet family is happy?
"Don't push Brian any more. Do you want Brian to become a second me?"
Rufus had endured this sentence for many years, and wanted to keep it in his stomach all his life, but
his father would never realize that what he had done was wrong and selfish.
Hearing that, Felix raised his deep eyes.
"Are you blaming me for forcing you to get married?"
Felix asked Rufus in a cold voice.
Seeing that his father was angry, Rufus hesitated, not because he was afraid of him, but because he
could not accept the reality. But having said that, there was no turning back.
"Yes, I blame you. I wouldn't be the man I am now if you hadn't forced me into marriage. I wouldn't
have been alone all these years if you didn't control my life. I have been lonely and helpless since I got
married."
Rufus had expressed his depression today, which had been in his heart for nearly forty years. His
whole life was bitter, only because of his father's selfishness.
"You blame me? I did that for you and the Bennet Group. Would the Bennet Group have grown so fast
if you hadn't married?"
Felix slowed down his speech and showed a hurtful look. He didn't do that for himself, but for everyone
in the Bennet family. Why they were blaming him now?
"Do you think I am good? Have you ever wondered if I had a nice family and nothing to worry about, I
could make the Bennet Group better? I married with Brian's mother. What help did I get from her
family? It was me who indulged them.”
Now that he had mentioned what had happened, he had to let his father know it. Even though his father
still didn't realize he was wrong, he wanted to say what he hadn't said.
“Brian's uncle and aunt are abroad, and they are still alive. Ask them what they have done for me.
When I was in trouble, was there one person who stepped up to help me? It was me alone solved the
problem."
Speaking of that, Rufus was upset. He was filial, if not for the respect to his father, not for fear that his
father would destroy his marriage, he would not conceal it.
His marriage was not what he wanted, but when he had kids, he let it go for the sake of his kids.
However, he could not tell his father the fact that his wife’s family had not helped him, or he would get
divorced, and then his father would find him a richer father-in-law. In that way, two kids would be
ruined.
"They didn't help?"
Felix asked unexpectedly. As far as he knew, it was Brian's grandfather who helped the Bennet Group
when Rufus was in trouble. But Rufus was not a liar. What went wrong and whose fault was it?
"No, not once. I resolved the problem by my own."
"Dad, since we brought it up today, I'll say more about it."
Rufus continued.
"My marriage was a mistake, but I didn't make a mistake meeting Isobel."
Rufus finally mentioned Isobel in front of his father, because she was an essential factor in the following
topic.
"Dad, it has been 21 years, it is the first time I mention Isobel in front of you. It was my fault, but you
drove her away, and you blamed her for everything. What a burden you have put on a weak woman?
Have you thought about her feelings?"
Speaking of Isobel, Rufus was agitated and wanted to cry aloud. Her youth could not be bought by the
fortune of the Bennet Group, but his father mercilessly destroyed it. It was terrible, his father had
nothing different with an executioner.
"We're talking about the Bennet Group. Why do you mention Isobel?"
Felix did not feel that he was wrong in what happened to Isobel or regretted that he had driven her
away. If not for Brian's mother committed suicide, Rufus would still have a complete family.
"She had to be mentioned. If you hadn't forced her out, I wouldn't have lived so pessimistic these
twenty years."
Rufus said to his father, who was not sorry.
“Brian's mother and I had agreed to divorce, and she wanted to part with me. I want to get married to
Isobel after that. She helps me take care of my family, so that I can devote myself to the Bennet Group,
but you interfere with it and messed up all my plans."
"Isobel's life and death are uncertain, how can I have mood to continue to manage the Bennet Group?
If I had not abandoned the Bennet Group, would it have been stagnant for so many years, and would it
have been messed up by Thomas? If there had not been a few years of stagnation, no company in the
world, let alone the country, could have surpassed the Bennet Group.”
"That's what happens when you insisted good match. That's what happens when you arranged a
marriage. Are you going to drive Brian away as you did to me, and make the Bennet Group fall?"
Rufus was angry because his father was cold-blooded, selfish, and domineering that because his
father wanted to control Brian’s marriage.
Felix's icy eyes fixed on Rufus. He was angry, gasping for breath, but he could not sat a word.
What Rufus said was the scar that he did not want to admit and could not erase. If Rufus had not let go
of the Bennet Group, there would not have been that period of time under the management of Thomas.
There would be no stagnation or even retreat. The Bennet Group would be more prosperous today.
However, all this was because of Isobel's departure. It destroyed Rufus’ hope and he became hopeless
for all things and resolutely abandoned the Bennet Group.
There was silence in the study for a long time. Felix thought about Rufus' words repeatedly, but there
was one thing he did not understand.
“I have a question. Since you have agreed with Brian’s mother to divorce, why did she choose to
commit suicide?”
Felix fell silent and did not feel as angry as before.
However, Rufus could not say that because he wanted to retain the most basic respect for the dead.
"Dad, I can't answer that. But I promise it's not because of my relationship with Isobel."
Rufus did not tell Isobel the reason of Brian’s mother, and he would not tell his father, or there would be
more troubles. It was the only thing he could protect for his wife.
Rufus calmed down. He was tired of standing and speaking, so he went to the sofa and sat down.
"Dad, there was no love between Brian's mother and me. We had two kids, but we never really got
together. You can see that."
"I was 40 when I met Isobel. Do you know how sad it is that a man does not know what love is until he
is 40?"
Rufus gave a wry smile, feeling painful in heart. But he wanted to tell his father that Isobel was
innocent.
"I told you that it was not Isobel's fault. I hid the fact that I was married and she was deceived by me.
But you think it was Isobel seduced me and put all the mistakes to Isobel, which made her and her
family had a hard lesson."
"Dad, Isobel was pregnant, it is my child, she......"
Rufus stopped at this. If he said it out, it would be a blow to Vanessa and her studies would be affected.
"Isobel was pregnant?"
Felix heard it for the first time. He did not know that, or he would not been so cruel.
"Yes, she has my child. But she did not use the kid to coerce anything, did not use the kid to break up
my family. She'd rather abort the kid and go away than put me between you and her."
