A Car Accident
“What exactly did you say to him? Why did you upset him?”
Gloria opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.
Nydia sensed something wrong and hurriedly walked up several steps to get Jennifer away from Gloria.
“Jennifer, calm down. What happened?”
Gloria closed her eyes, full of remorse. “It‘s my fault.”
Nydia was confused. “Gloria?”
Instead of responding to her, Gloria turned to Bryson‘s friends and asked anxiously, “How is he doing?”
One of them sighed, “We were drinking together and talking about the girls we liked. Bryson didn‘t say
anything but swigged his beer. We sensed that something was not quite right, so we stopped talking.
Bryson suddenly got up and said he needed to make a phone call.”
Gloria clenched her fists and turned a little pale.
Nydia‘s eyes dilated slightly. Gloria rejected Bryson; otherwise, he would not be so sad… He went out
in a drunken state and then ended up… getting knocked over by a car?
“We guessed he must have called you, but after a long time, he didn‘t come back. We went out to look
for him and saw he had been hit by a car. It was too late…”
Gloria drew a shallow breath and asked, “Is… he alright?”
“His head is bleeding. The doctor inside is doing the best he can to save him and says there is hope.”
Gloria stood outside the operating room and breathed a sigh of relief, unable to say a word.
Feelings of guilt began to gnaw away at her heart. If he had been more careless, he would have been
dead.
Gloria‘s heart throbbed painfully.
Jennifer lost her cool and snarled, “What exactly did you say to him on the phone? You hurt his feelings
and made him like this!”
Gloria opened her mouth to speak, but she just couldn‘t repeat the exact words she had said to Bryson
on the phone.
Nydia chimed in, “Let‘s not fight. The doctor is doing his job inside.”
Jennifer turned her head away without another word.
Nydia held Gloria‘s hand and whispered, “Don‘t think too much. Let‘s wait for him to come out.”
Gloria nodded silently. Tons of guilt and worry filled her heart.
Another hour passed and the red light finally turned green.
Everyone was completely relieved, and one by one, they stood at the door.
They were all nervous about the results. One of the men said, in a panic, “Uh, we haven‘t told Bryson‘s
family about this. We only called you guys. Should we call them now?”
Gloria‘s brow furrowed. Of course, they had to call Bryson‘s family, but it seemed that they couldn‘t help
even if they were there. The hospital would naturally take good care of Bryson.
They could just wait for Bryson to wake up and ask him about this, but they had no idea when he would
wake up.
After a pause, Gloria spoke, “Let‘s wait a little longer.”
Jennifer didn’t say a word. Her eyes were swollen from crying, and tears ran down her cheeks.
About twenty minutes later, the door to the operating room was finally opened. Everyone gathered
around, with great concern and fear in their eyes.
The doctor took off his mask and looked very serious.
